ECHTE LIEFDE VOOR DE SPORT

Eén van de mooiste gedichten over honkbal is Silver Nights van de Amerikaanse auteur James S. LaVilla-Havelin. Het gaat niet over grootse prestaties of incidentele hoogtepunten maar beschrijft de liefde voor de sport op een ontroerend simpele manier. Hij kiest ook niet voor een grote club maar voor de Rochester Red Wings een Minor-Leagueteam dat in New York speelt. Tot 1996 in het Silver Stadium.
      Het team speelt triple AAA. Daarin komen -vaak jonge- spelers uit, die allemaal hopen en dromen dat ze de big leagues (The Majors) zullen halen. (Lavilla is: watching the kids who hope for the bigs). Dat zal overigens maar zeer weinigen lukken. In het gedicht worden er een paar genoemd. Bobby Grich, Don Baylor, Steve Bilko, Luke Easter, Roger Freed, Enos Cabell en Estel Crabtree.

    Silver Nights

                                                                                                          
There is no other place as green as this

I watch the sun go down on the church’s steeple.

Overhead the planes make their silent approach.

I drink and the lights take hold, and cheering.

 On Silver nights where I have seen

        Grich and Baylor, Bilko and Easter,

        Freed, Cabell, and Crabtree-

        all playing on the green,

  I have wished to be here, as the night is falling,

         always as the lights make

         the colors richer, deeper.

  Some histories of the diamond are purely personal:

  I sit along the third base line, drink Miller

        or Jenny or Jenny Cream,

  eat peanuts, sometimes.

  
There was a year when no pro ball was played in Rochester.

         I wrote it down.

They raced bicycles that year, while Rochester’s team

        played in Montreal.

And some histories, silver with night fall.

Sitting here and keeping score, eyeing the yellow-

        gold of the French’s Mustard sign,

        watching the kids who hope for the bigs,

 there is nothing more on all the silver nights of

        all my summers, nothing more

        that I could wish.

Morrie Silver

Het gedicht is geschreven in de jaren zeventig van de vorig eeuw.
      Pas in 1968 namelijk werd het stadion vernoemd naar de zakenman Morrie Silver, die ondermeer president en general-manager van de club was. En in 1981 maakte Cal Ripken jr., de meest beroemde speler die ooit voor de Red Wings uitkwam zijn debuut in de Majors. Als het gedicht na die datum geschreven zou zijn had hij Ripken natuurlijk in het rijtje moeten opnemen. Andere grote namen die later voor Rochester uitkwamen zijn Dennis Martinez, Davey Johnson, Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Eddie Murray (Big league debuut 1977!), Jim Palmer, Mike Mussina en Stan Musial.
